"Every Joke Is Half the Truth" is rife with electric guitars, organs, brushed drums, the thunderstick, and Leah Hayes' fragile voice. Scary Mansion is Hayes with Ben Shapiro on drums and Bradley Banks on bass. In addition to her music career (playing in the band La Laque, Satan's Fingers with members of Herman Dune, singing on TV On the Radio's album Return to Cookie Mountain) Hayes' illustration work (with McSweeney's, Punk Planet, two books on Fantagraphics) and curatorial interests (hosting shows in her Williamsburg apartment) make her a multimedia experience sans technological bells and whistles, just a modern day Renaissance woman and songwriter extraordinaire.
"Every Joke Is Half the Truth" is Scary Mansion's debut album. They will be appearing at SXSW 2008 along with an East Coast tour in the Spring.
